AJ Split Megaminx is a dodecahedron puzzle from AJ that looks like a regular megaminx but has extra cuts running through the corners and edges. You can scramble and solve it just like a classic megaminx. However, once the layers are aligned correctly, additional turning planes unlock, and that's when the puzzle becomes noticeably harder. Distributors classify it as a megaminx shape mod.

How the "split" works

The extra layers can't be turned at any moment. First you need to position the faces so that the cuts line up with each other. Only then can you turn the hidden slice. According to user feedback, the extra moves are blocked in the solved state. To use them, you have to make quite a few setup moves and then undo them. Some people find this an interesting challenge, while others see it as a pointless complication. If you stick to regular face turns, you solve it like a standard megaminx.

How it turns

This is a collector's puzzle, not a speedcubing megaminx. There's no point judging it by TPS or corner cutting, because with the extra layers what really matters is understanding the mechanism. Reviews describe the turning as smooth, but that's a subjective impression rather than a hard specification. At 237 g it is noticeably heavier than typical megaminxes, which you can clearly feel in your hand.

For those who can already solve a regular megaminx and want something new. It's also a great fit for collectors of unusual dodecahedra and fans of AJ designs. For your first megaminx or for timed practice, a classic magnetic model is a better choice.
