Calvins Puzzle 3x3 Double Cube III is two 3x3 cubes joined into a single shape. In version III, the two cubes share a 2x2x2 block, so some pieces belong to both cubes at the same time. As a result, many moves are blocked (bandaging), and depending on where the pieces are, a turn that worked a moment ago may suddenly be impossible. This is a shape mod for solving just for fun and for your collection, not a speedcubing cube.

What makes it challenging

Of all the Calvin's Puzzle 3x3 double cubes, version III restricts moves the most, because it has the largest shared section. You can't just solve one cube and then the other. Every algorithm you perform on one half also affects the other, so you need to plan the order in which you solve them and look for sequences that don't break what you've already solved. Knowing how to solve a regular 3x3 cube is a must, but the beginner's method alone won't be enough here. You'll need patience and some figuring things out on your own.

Mechanism

The cube has no magnets and no UV coating. It also has no tension adjustment or compression system. With a puzzle of this type, what matters most is that the mechanism can turn the bandaged layers, not a high TPS. Some users report that the cube can be dry and fairly loose out of the box. A little lube usually helps in that case.

For people who can comfortably solve a 3x3 and want something different from yet another NxN cube. Double Cube III will also appeal to collectors of shape mods and bandaged puzzles. If you're just getting started with double cubes, it will be easier to begin with the earlier versions of the series, which have fewer shared pieces.
