Calvins Puzzle 3x3x5 Fisher Rocket V1

Calvins Puzzle 3x3x5 Fisher Rocket V1 is a shape mod of the 3x3x5 cuboid that combines two other Calvin's Puzzle designs: the Fisher Barrel Cuboid and the Fisher Cuboid. The top three layers come from the Barrel version and the bottom two from the classic Fisher Cuboid. This gives the puzzle two clearly different sections, which is where the "rocket" name comes from. It is available with a black body (Black).

What makes it challenging

The mechanism is a standard 3x3x5 cuboid, but the outer shape is cut in Fisher style. After a few moves the puzzle loses its regular form and starts shapeshifting. That means you have to keep track not only of the colours but also of which piece fits where. Each of the two sections has a different cut layout, so the Rocket V1 solves differently from both the Fisher Cuboid and the Fisher Barrel. Users praise its smooth turning and strong shapeshifting effect, and rate the solve itself as not too difficult. If you can already solve a regular 3x3x5 cuboid, you should be able to handle it without learning a completely new method.

V1 or V2?

Calvin's Puzzle has released two versions of the Fisher Rocket. Both include layers from the Fisher Cuboid but differ in the other section. The V1 has three Fisher Barrel Cuboid layers on top and two Fisher Cuboid layers at the bottom. In the V2, the top two layers come from the Fisher Cuboid and the bottom three from the Fisher Star Cuboid. So the versions differ in appearance and in how the pieces shift apart while scrambling. Both versions look great side by side in a collection.

Who is it for?

The Fisher Rocket V1 is a good choice if you can already solve a 3x3 and want to try something different from yet another speedcube. It also makes sense for collectors of cuboids and shape mods, as Calvin's Puzzle production runs are short and it is hard to find a replacement. This is a puzzle for relaxed solving, not a cube for breaking records. For a child's first cube, a classic magnetic 3x3 is a better choice.
