Evgeniy Icosahedron Carousel is an icosahedron designed by Evgeniy Grigoriev. The puzzle is a tribute to the Dogic, a legendary puzzle with 80 moving pieces that was hard to get for years. Grigoriev redesigned it from scratch on a simpler mechanism based on the Crazy Megaminx (similar to the mf8). In 2021, Calvins Puzzle started mass production. Carousel is one of three versions of this puzzle. It has a black body and stickers in 20 colors.

How is the Carousel version different?

All three versions (Standard, Dogix and Carousel) share the same mechanism. They differ only in the color arrangement, and that changes the difficulty. Dogix has 12 colors arranged as on the original Dogic. Carousel has 20 colors arranged in a pattern that resembles a carousel. As a result, many pieces have more than one color, so you have to match more details than in the other versions. Users consider Carousel the hardest version in the series.

How it turns

This is not a speed cube, and you should know that before you buy. It has no magnets, and its design was not made with fast solving in mind. According to user reviews, it turns stiffly out of the box because it is not lubed at the factory. It is also unforgiving of imprecise moves. Corner cutting is practically non-existent, so you need to align each layer carefully before the next turn, otherwise lockups occur. Users say that lubing it and adjusting the tension noticeably improve smoothness. Some people reported that the triangular corner pieces can separate. Popping is rare.

The puzzle is large and heavy. With this many colors, that actually helps, because the pattern is easy to see.

Evgeniy Icosahedron Carousel is for collectors and for anyone who enjoys unusual puzzles and wants an icosahedron inspired by the Dogic. Experience with the Megaminx or Crazy-type puzzles will be very helpful. For your first icosahedron, the Standard or Dogix version will be easier. This model is not really a good gift for a child who is just starting out with cubes.
