Calvins Puzzle Evgeniy Icosahedron Dogix

Evgeniy Icosahedron Dogix is an icosahedron-shaped puzzle from Calvin's Puzzle, designed by Evgeniy Grigoriev. It has a lot in common with the Dogic, an old puzzle by the Vecsei family that was hard to get for many years and highly sought after by collectors. Grigoriev did not copy the original. He redesigned the mechanism from scratch, making it simpler, based on solutions known from the Crazy Megaminx and suitable for mass production. The first version was created in 2018 as a 3D-printing project, and factory production started in 2021.

How it works and what the Dogix version is

Moves are made around the 12 vertices of the shape: you turn the five triangles that meet at a given vertex. The mechanism is similar to modern Megaminxes, so if you already know that puzzle, you will quickly get the hang of how the turns work. The name Dogix comes from the colour scheme. The black body has stickers in 12 colours, arranged just like on the original Dogic. This colour layout also changes how you solve it compared to the other versions.

Dogix, Standard or Carousel?

The Evgeniy Icosahedron series comes in three versions with the same mechanism. They differ only in their stickers:

• Standard: 20 colours, each face in a single colour.
• Carousel: 20 colours arranged to resemble a carousel. The faces are split in half between two colours.
• Dogix: 12 colours in the layout of the original Dogic.

The mechanism and shape are the same in all three, so the choice comes down to which colour scheme you want to solve and which one suits your collection better.

Who is it for?

This is a puzzle for collectors and fans of unusual twisty puzzles, not a speedcubing cube. It has no magnets and is not a WCA event. It is best suited to someone who has already tackled the Megaminx and wants to take on something less obvious. For a child's first puzzle, it's better to choose something simpler.
