DaYan GuHong 4M

The fourth generation of the DaYan GuHong, the series that got many cubers started in speedcubing. The original GuHong from 2010 was the first speedcube to allow noticeable reverse corner cutting. The DaYan GuHong 4M (often listed online as GuHong V4 M) is a 56 mm magnetic 3x3 cube. It was released at the end of 2020 and is legal for official competitions.

How it turns

In terms of design, the cube is very similar to the third version, but it has stronger magnets. This keeps it stable even though the layers have quite a lot of play. It weighs 67 g, so it is light. Users describe it as fast and fairly quiet, with a dry, smooth feel. It handles corner cutting with no trouble, although the cutting feels snappy rather than fluid. On hard corner cuts you can hear a distinct click.

Tension adjustment

The GuHong 4M uses a classic screw-and-spring setup. There is no numbered adjustment, no MagLev and no core magnets. Straight out of the box the cube can be very loose, so it is a good idea to tighten the screws right away with the included screwdriver. If the setup is too loose, corner twists may occur.

Things to keep in mind

The biggest drawback of this cube, just like version 3, is that the lube wears off quickly, so you need to re-lube it more often. The plastic is thin and slightly translucent, and some users have reported cracked centers after heavy use. Keep this in mind if you turn aggressively.

Who is it for?

For anyone moving up from their first cube to a faster magnetic model, and for cubers who like light, fast cubes without complex adjustment systems. If you want adjustable magnet strength, compression or core magnets, you are better off checking out newer high-end models.
