DaYan ZhanChi V5 M 3x3 Fancy

ZhanChi is one of the best-known names in speedcubing history, and the V5 M is its modern incarnation with a full set of adjustments. The DaYan ZhanChi V5 M 3x3 Fancy is the middle of the three versions of this model (Standard, Fancy, Supreme/Premium). Unlike the Standard, it has MagLev and an additional layer alignment system. You can recognize it by its mint (aqua) internals. In our shop it is available in Stickerless Bright.

How it turns

The Fancy is light to turn, fast and flexible. Users point out its smooth feel, quiet turning and very good corner cutting. The manufacturer specifies 55° corner cutting and 35° reverse corner cutting. Out of the box, the cube tends to be fairly loose and fast. If you prefer controllable, "tight" cubes, you will probably start with stronger tension and magnet settings. With a very firm grip, this flexibility can make the layers slip out of alignment more easily. In reviews, the Supreme version is described as more controlled straight out of the box.

Technologies and adjustment

• MagLev: instead of classic springs, layer tension comes from repelling magnets.
• Ball-Core: magnets between the corners and the core help align the layers and stabilize the cube during fast turning.
• Edge/core repulsion: repelling magnets between the edges and the core that support automatic layer alignment. In the Supreme, this role is played by magnets in the center caps (cap-axis).
• 94 magnets factory-installed.
• 5 levels of compression and 5 levels of tensioning.
• Adjustable magnet strength: 5 corner/core settings and 6 edge/corner settings.
• Pieces with wave grooves that help spread the lube.

Standard, Fancy or Supreme?

The Standard has white internals and springs. It is the lightest, but it still lets you adjust the magnets, tension and compression. The Fancy adds MagLev and edge/core repulsion. The Supreme has lavender internals, MagLev and a cap-axis system with interchangeable magnets in the centers. The Fancy is a sensible choice for anyone who wants MagLev and Ball-Core but doesn't need an elaborate system in the centers.

Who is it for?

For cubers who like fast, light and flexible cubes and are happy to spend a moment finding the right settings. If you prefer very stable, blocky 3x3 cubes, be aware that the Fancy is not like that on loose settings.
