DaYan ZhanChi V5 M 3x3 Standard

In 2024, DaYan returned to its ZhanChi series with the V5 M. The cube comes in three versions: Standard, Fancy and Premium (called Supreme by some shops). All of them share the same size and the same extensive adjustment system. The DaYan ZhanChi V5 M 3x3 Standard is the simplest of the three: it has a Ball-Core and classic conical springs, but no MagLev or additional positioning systems. The internal plastic is white, and the cube itself is stickerless.

Adjustment in the Standard version

The biggest strength of this version is the number of settings, something you usually only get in more expensive cubes. On the Standard you can adjust:

• tension in 5 levels and compression in 5 levels (dual-adjustment system),
• corner/core magnet strength, i.e. the Ball-Core magnets, in 5 levels,
• edge/corner magnet strength in 6 levels.

The cube comes with 64 magnets installed. The pieces have profiled grooves (wave groove) that help spread the lube and smooth out the turning. Some users point out that at first it is hard to tell which level a given adjustment is currently set to, so finding your own setup may take a while.

How it turns

Reviews of the ZhanChi V5 M series describe it as light, smooth and relatively quiet. On tighter settings the cube becomes more blocky, and on looser ones it is more flexible. The Ball-Core helps keep the layers in place and makes it easier for them to settle during fast turning. Some people feel, however, that on a loose setup the cube can be too "fluid" in the hands. In that case, higher tension or stronger magnets help.

Standard, Fancy or Premium?

Instead of springs, the Fancy has MagLev, i.e. repelling magnets, plus repelling magnets between the edges and the core. The Premium adds magnets in the center caps that align the cube after each layer turn. Some users find this version heavier and more controlled. The Standard is the closest to a classic spring cube, while keeping full adjustment of magnets, tension and compression.

Who is it for?

This version is a great fit for cubers who want a cube with a Ball-Core and wide adjustment options but don't need MagLev. It also suits those who prefer the traditional feel of springs. Beginners can easily use it on the factory settings.
