Solar is DianSheng's first series of magnetic speed cubes. Before that, the brand was known mainly for unusual puzzles. The DianSheng Solar 4x4 M UV is the magnetic 4x4 cube from this series, in a version with a UV coating and a stickerless bright colour scheme. It measures approx. 60 mm, a typical size for a speedcubing 4x4. This model is for anyone who wants a solid magnetic 4x4 cube but doesn't need a flagship.

How it turns

The magnets come factory-installed. They help the layers settle into place, so the cube is less likely to get stuck mid-turn. On a 4x4 this is especially useful during edge pairing and inner slice turns, where lockups happen easily. The pieces have a shape called "tortoise shell". According to the manufacturer, it helps turns stay smooth and spreads the lube more evenly. This version's magnets are usually described as strong and snappy. The cube clearly snaps into place on each layer rather than gliding freely.

This is a budget 4x4, so it doesn't have high-end features such as a magnetic core or an advanced tension adjustment system. It's more than enough for learning and regular solving, but compared with top 4x4 cubes, expect it to be less refined.

What the UV coating gives you

The UV coating gives the cube a glossy surface that grips your fingers better than matte plastic. This matters on a 4x4, because a secure grip during inner slice turns helps keep the cube from slipping out of your hands. If you prefer a dry, matte feel, the UV version may feel too grippy to you.

Solar 4x4 M or Solar S4M?

There is also a newer model, the DianSheng Solar S4M, which is available in a UV version as well. It's a different cube: slightly smaller and with a different design. Specifications listed for the S4M, such as the number of magnets or the weight, do not apply to this model.

Who is it for?

The Solar 4x4 M UV works well as a first magnetic 4x4 cube: for someone who has mastered the 3x3 and wants to try a bigger cube, or for someone moving up from a non-magnetic 4x4. It's also a sensible choice for a child who can already solve a 3x3. More advanced speedcubers looking for a competition cube should compare it with higher-end models.
