DianSheng Twisted 2x2 Transparent is a shape mod puzzle built on a 2x2 cube mechanism. In its solved state it is a cube with a side of approx. 55 mm, but the pieces are cut so that the shape starts to twist out of form after the first few moves. This version is made of transparent plastic. The shop offers it in White, Pink, Yellow and Red.

What makes it challenging

The moves are the same as on a regular 2x2, so the solving method stays the same. Recognition is the hard part. Once scrambled, the puzzle looks nothing like a cube, so you first need to learn what each piece looks like in every position, and only then apply the algorithms you already know. If you can already solve a 2x2, you will usually find your way around the Twisted 2x2 fairly quickly. At the beginning, a little patience is all you need.

Mechanism and turning

Inside is a typical DianSheng speedcubing mechanism. Sellers describe the turning as smooth and predictable, even when the puzzle is halfway through a shape change. The contact surfaces of the pieces are concave, which according to the manufacturer reduces friction and keeps the lube in the mechanism for longer. Keep in mind, though, that this is a shape mod, not a cube for setting speed records. Its uneven shape when scrambled means you hold it differently from a standard 2x2.

If a pop happens, the pieces that fall out can usually be pushed back in by hand. However, do not twist the corners as you would on a 3x3 cube, as you can break a piece this way on a 2x2.

Who is it for?

For cubers who can solve a 2x2 and want to try something other than yet another classic cube. It also works well as a first shape mod in your collection or as a gift for someone who already solves cubes. The transparent plastic looks great on a shelf. For your very first cube, it is better to choose a standard 2x2 or 3x3 and add the Twisted later.
