GAN 14 Maglev Aurora Limited Edition is GAN's 2024 summer limited edition. The manufacturer calls it the GAN14 Maglev Pro Aurora. Mechanically it is a GAN 14 Maglev Pro, the version with the improved anti-pop system. What sets it apart is the look: a transparent body that reveals an interior in blue, green, pink and yellow, like the northern lights. The cube comes without stickers applied. Two sticker sets are included, transparent and standard, so you can choose the look yourself.

How it turns

Out of the box the cube is very fast. Some people find it too fast until they tighten the tension a little. Once the setup is dialled in, users praise its fast yet stable turning, good corner cutting and reverse corner cutting, and reliable auto-alignment. The manufacturer specifies corner cutting up to 55° and reverse corner cutting up to 35°. The Pro version pops less often than the first GAN 14, even on looser settings. Some reviews also note that the magnets are weaker than in previous GAN models and that catching can occur on certain settings. Finding the right setup takes a bit of experimenting.

MagLev and adjustment

• MagLev: instead of springs, the cube uses repelling magnets. This means less friction and light, fast turning.
• Enhanced Core Positioning 4.0: magnets in the core help align the layers and keep the cube stable during fast turning.
• GES v3 numerical adjustment: 6 tension levels and 6 center travel levels.
• Adjustable magnet strength: 12 levels on the corners and 3 on the edges. Altogether this gives 1296 possible configurations.
• Pro Level Anti-Pop: redesigned edges and center locking protect against pops.

You need the included tool to remove the center caps. Some users find it inconvenient that this can't be done by hand.

Who is it for?

This cube is for a speedcuber or collector who wants the flagship GAN 14 Pro in an unusual edition. If you like light, fast MagLev and precise cube tuning, you get exactly the same mechanism as in the regular Pro version. This edition is bought mainly for its looks and the set of extras. If you just need a cube for practice, you can choose the standard Pro version. For a child's first cube, a simpler and cheaper magnetic model will do.
