GAN 14 Maglev Frost 3x3

The GAN 14 Maglev was GAN's flagship 3x3 of 2023, and it is still one of the most adjustable cubes you can get. The GAN 14 Maglev Frost 3x3 is the version with a matte (frosted) surface without UV coating, in the stickerless bright colour scheme. It uses MagLev instead of springs, has 88 magnets and an adjustment system that, according to the manufacturer, offers 1296 setting combinations.

How it turns

This is a GAN cube with MagLev, so don't expect a slow, heavy mechanism. It is fast, has light turning and, according to user reviews, very good corner cutting. Some people say the magnets are slightly weaker than in the GAN 12 and GAN 13, and the feel is sometimes described as a little crunchy. With aggressive turning and a loose setup, the cube may feel too fast. In that case, higher tension, shorter center travel or stronger magnets will help.

MagLev and adjustment

• MagLev: instead of springs, the cube uses repelling magnets, so turning is lighter and there is no typical "springy" feel.
• 12 corner magnet strength settings: you change them with interchangeable magnetic inserts using the included tool. These settings determine how strongly the cube aligns the layers on its own (the manufacturer states auto-aligning in the 15–40° range).
• 3 edge magnet levels: a new feature in the GAN 14 that previous models didn't have.
• GES v3: 6 tension levels and 6 center travel levels.
• Enhanced Core Positioning 4.0: positioning magnets in the core that help align the layers and keep the cube stable during fast turning.

Most cubers stick to a few proven setups anyway, and the extreme options are rarely needed. Still, the wide adjustment range makes it easy to tune the cube to your own style without replacing any parts.

Frost, UV or Pro?

The Frost and UV versions have the same mechanism. Frost has matte plastic that doesn't shine and doesn't pick up fingerprints. UV has a glossy coating with a stronger grip. The GAN 14 Maglev Pro is a later version with extra anti-pop protection, a redesigned center mounting and a new adjustment tool. This cube is the standard GAN 14, not the Pro.

Who is it for?

For speedcubers who like fast cubes with light turning and want to choose their own setup. If you already have a GAN 13 Maglev, you won't notice a big difference. For a child's first cube, a simpler and cheaper magnetic model is usually enough, as you don't need this many settings to get started.
