GAN 16 ui Maglev Max UV Minions

This is a special edition of the GAN 16 ui Maglev Max UV smart cube, made under license from Illumination, the studio that created the Minions. The mechanism and electronics are the same as in the standard GAN16 ui Maglev MAX, GAN's current flagship smart cube. What's different is the look and the box contents: the color scheme is inspired by the movie, the center has a Minion cap, the set includes themed accessories, and extras are unlocked in the app.

How it turns

MagLev replaces springs with repelling magnets. In the GAN16 ui, the repulsion works together with magnetic attraction, which GAN calls dual maglev drive. The cube turns lightly and quickly, and according to the manufacturer it aligns the layer by itself when it is off by up to approx. 30°. Users of the GAN16 Max series praise its very good corner cutting, smooth feel and stability at high TPS. Some people, however, find the cube too fast or too slippery straight out of the box. A thicker lube or a stronger magnet setting usually helps.

Magnets and adjustment

• 124 magnets in the Celestial Magnetic Network layout: 16 inner, 48 middle, 48 outer and 12 ring magnets.
• Omni-support Spherical Orbit. The pieces move along a spherical track, and the hollowed-out design is meant to reduce friction.
• 72 Magnetic GES settings, i.e. 6 center travel levels and 12 magnetic tension levels. You change them with the key included in the set.
• UV Coated. The glossy coating gives a strong grip.

Smart features

The cube connects via Bluetooth to the CubeStation app. It records turns at 1° resolution, as well as pauses and changes in pace. Based on this, the app builds a profile of your solving, and the PiPi AI assistant shows you where you're losing time. The battery lasts approx. 15 hours, and the Power GanPod charging case adds approx. 30 hours. The Minions version unlocks a movie-themed interface, an avatar frame and a startup animation in the app.

Minions, standard ui Max or regular GAN16 Max?

The Minions version has the same features and adjustment as the standard ui Max. You pay extra for the look and the themed set. The regular GAN16 Maglev Max has no electronics, but it has more magnets (136 instead of 124), and the manufacturer specifies auto-alignment up to 40° instead of 30°. If you don't plan to use the app, that version may be enough.

Who is it for?

For a cuber who wants to train with data from the app and loves the Minions. The cube also makes a great gift for a fan of the movie who already solves. As a first cube, it's a very fast mechanism with a lot of electronics, so a beginner is usually better off with a simpler magnetic model.
