The GAN 356i v3, also known as the GAN 356 i3, is a magnetic 3x3 smart cube. It connects via Bluetooth to the Cube Station app on your phone. The app tracks every move in real time, so you can time your solves, view statistics, practise with a tutorial and solve online with others. This cube replaced the GAN 356 i2. GAN advertises it as the first smart cube with adjustable magnet strength.

Electronics and move tracking

Inside there is a Smart Core 3.0 module and a gyroscope. Thanks to them, the app shows on screen not only the layer turns but also how you hold and rotate the whole cube. According to the manufacturer, it hardly misses any moves even during fast turning (above 10 TPS). The cube is powered by a built-in rechargeable battery. GAN states up to 15 hours of continuous use on a single charge. You charge it by placing it on the included charging station, which has an LED showing the charging status.

How it turns and what you can adjust

The electronics take up quite a lot of space, so the internal pieces are flatter than in a regular speedcube. Even so, the i3 turns smoothly, and users describe the turning as controllable rather than very fast. You can adjust two things:

• Adjustable magnets: 7 levels, changed with the included screwdriver.
• Tension Adjustment System: you change the tension by swapping the springs and spacers included in the set.

Who is it for?

For anyone who wants to track their progress, analyse their solves in the app or compete online. It also makes a great gift for a child who enjoys connecting a cube to a phone. Keep in mind that smart cubes cannot be used at official WCA competitions. If you mainly care about solving itself and competing, a regular magnetic 3x3 cube will serve you better.
