GAN Square-1 MagLev + UV

This is GAN's first Square-1, and it shakes up a category where not much has happened for a long time. The GAN Square-1 MagLev + UV is the first Square-1 with MagLev straight from the factory. On top of that, you get a 36-magnet system, numbered tension adjustment and a UV Coated finish. It weighs about 81 g, noticeably less than the competitors' models that have been popular so far, such as the YJ MGC Square-1.

Magnets and layer alignment

On a Square-1, precise layer alignment matters even more than on a 3x3. You can only do a slash move (/) when the layers are perfectly aligned. GAN solved this with 36 magnets: 32 in the layers and 4 in the core. The layer magnets snap each turn into place every 30°, and the core magnets help with the slash, the 180° turn. The magnets are fairly strong, and every move ends with a distinct "click". This helps you execute algorithms quickly and reduces lockups caused by misaligned layers.

MagLev and how the cube feels

In the middle section, traditional springs have been replaced with repelling magnets. This means less friction, no spring noise and a light slash. The cube is very fast right out of the box. Users point out that it is hard to slow down and that thicker lubes work better in it. Corner cutting is on par with other premium models, but it needs slightly firmer pressure. At very loose settings, half-pops can happen, so we recommend moderate tension.

Adjustment and construction

• Magnetic GES: 6 × 6, giving 36 settings. There are 6 tension levels and 6 center travel levels (the equivalent of compression). You change both with a double-ended key. The settings are numbered, so it's easy to go back to the one that suited you.
• Honeycomb structure. The internal pieces have honeycomb-textured contact surfaces. They hold lube better and create less resistance.
• Reinforced center. GAN used a dual-foot design and a thicker center, which is meant to increase stability and reduce popping.

Who is it for?

For anyone who trains Square-1 seriously or wants to switch from an older model to a lighter, faster one. If you prefer slower, controllable cubes, expect to spend some time adjusting the tension and choosing the right lube. The UV Coated version has a glossy surface that offers a good grip. It comes stickerless, with black plastic on one of the layers (Black Top).
