GAN Square-1 MagLev + UV Minions

The GAN Square-1 MagLev + UV Minions is a Square-1 in Minions-themed colors. GAN teased this puzzle for a long time and sent it out to testers. It is the first new speedcubing Square-1 in several years and the first one with MagLev straight from the factory. Until now, this category was dominated mainly by older models, led by the YJ MGC Square-1. Here you get a modern mechanism with magnetic layer alignment and numbered tension adjustment.

How it turns

On a Square-1, you have to align the layers precisely before every slice. If a layer is not fully turned, you get a lockup on the slash. GAN solves this problem with 36 magnets. 32 magnets between the pieces align the layers every 30°, and 4 Core Magnets make sure the slice (the 180° move) snaps into place. In practice, the puzzle pulls the layers into the correct position on its own. This makes it easier to execute algorithms quickly and harder to get stuck mid-move.

Straight out of the box, the puzzle is very fast and turns lightly. According to user reviews, some people may even find it too fast. If you prefer a more controllable feel, use a thicker lube or increase the tension. At around 80 g, it is noticeably lighter than a modded MGC Square-1. You will feel the difference especially during longer practice sessions.

MagLev and adjustment

Instead of springs, it uses MagLev, meaning repelling magnets. There is no spring friction or spring noise, and the turning is quiet and smooth. The adjustment is numbered and gives you 36 combinations (6 tension levels × 6 settings on the second adjustment axis). Every setting is marked, so it is easy to go back to a setup you know works. The inner surfaces of the pieces have a honeycomb pattern designed to reduce friction.

Who is it for?

It is a good choice if you already solve the Square-1 and want to move from older designs to newer hardware. It also works well for beginners. The magnets forgive imprecise layer alignment, which helps a lot when learning shapes and parity. The Minions theme makes it a great gift for a child. Mechanically, however, it is a fully fledged speedcubing puzzle, not a gadget.
