How solving works

In shape-shifting puzzles, colour isn't the most important thing. The pieces come in different sizes and shapes, so after just a few moves the puzzle gets distorted. The goal is to bring it back to its original form. The classic Mastermorphix is a tetrahedron-shaped modification of the 3x3 cube in which you identify the pieces by their shape. Are two layers less of a challenge?

The hardest part is figuring out where each piece fits and getting used to the fact that the scrambled puzzle looks completely different from the solved one. In practice, your first solve usually takes longer than the number of layers alone would suggest. The next ones go faster once you learn to recognise the pieces by their shape.

This is not a speedcubing puzzle, nor a good choice for a first puzzle.
