Lee 2-Layer SQ Mastermorphix is a two-layer version of the Mastermorphix. Inside, it runs on a 2x2 cube mechanism, while on the outside the puzzle is shaped like a tetrahedron, a triangular pyramid. We offer it in Black. The solved puzzle measures approximately 79 mm.

How it works

The Mastermorphix is a shape mod puzzle. You turn it just like a regular 2x2 cube, but the pieces have different shapes and sizes. Once scrambled, it loses its pyramid shape and turns into an irregular form with protruding pieces. So you have to solve not only the colors but also the shape.

The two-layer version is easier than the classic Mastermorphix, which is based on a 3x3 mechanism. Still, it is not just an ordinary 2x2 in a different shape. You recognize the pieces by their shape, not only by their colors, so even someone who knows the 2x2 well needs a moment to get used to it.

How to solve it

The moves and algorithms are the same as on a 2x2 cube, because the mechanism is unchanged. In practice, all you need is any 2x2 method and the ability to look at the Mastermorphix as if it were a cube. If you are starting from scratch, you can first learn to solve a regular 2x2 and then apply that knowledge to the pyramid.

Who is it for?

This puzzle is for people who already solve the 2x2 or 3x3 and want to try something different from yet another cube of the same shape. It is also a good introduction to shape mod puzzles before moving on to bigger Mastermorphixes. It is not a puzzle for timed speedcubing, but for collecting and casual solving. It also makes a great gift for anyone who enjoys puzzles.
