Lee X Cube III

Lee X Cube III is a shape-shifting puzzle from Lee, measuring about 60 mm. Once scrambled, it loses its regular shape, and your task is to bring it back to its original form. Lee is a small maker of unusual puzzles and shape mods, often produced using 3D printing. You won't find them in the catalogues of the big cube factories. We stock it in one colour version: Black.

How is it different from a regular cube?

On a classic 3x3 cube, every turn leaves you with a cube, so you only keep track of the colours. In a shape-shifting puzzle, the pieces differ in shape, and after a few moves the whole puzzle clearly changes form. That means you have to keep track of two things at once: where each piece goes and how the outline of the whole puzzle changes. Standard algorithms for a regular cube usually only help partly. The rest you work out yourself, and that's exactly where the fun is.

For collecting, not speedcubing

Looking for a cube to break records, with light turning and good corner cutting? This isn't the right category. Puzzles like this are solved calmly and thoughtfully, and what counts is the idea and the unusual design. Turn the mechanism gently, especially at first, until you know how the pieces move.

Who is it for?

For people who can already solve a 3x3 cube and want something less obvious, and for collectors of unusual puzzles. Lee X Cube III is not a good first puzzle for a child who is just learning to solve cubes. For a start, a classic magnetic 3x3 is a better choice. As a gift for someone who already has a few shape-shifting puzzles in their collection, it can be an interesting addition.
