LingAo Magic 12p

LingAo Magic 12p is a folding magic puzzle with 12 tiles. Among cubers, this version is known as the Master Magic. There are no layers or turns like on a cube. The tiles are connected by crossing strings, so you fold them and flip them over to different sides, and every move changes the position of several tiles at once. Once it's scrambled, your task is to bring the tiles back into the arrangement where the pictures on them form the correct pattern.

8 or 12 tiles?

The classic Magic has 8 tiles. The 12p version is longer and has more possible arrangements, so solving it takes more moves. If you already know the regular Magic, you'll find a similar mechanism here in a harder version. If this is your first puzzle of this type, the 8-tile version will be easier. Still, you can work out the Master Magic on your own by trial and error.

Build and handling

The LingAo is solidly made, and the tiles fold smoothly right out of the box. You can't force moves, because the tiles only fold in specific directions. If something resists, folding it the other way usually does the trick. It doesn't need breaking in or lube. Unfolded, it is about 32 cm long, and folded it fits in your hand.

Magic in competitions

Magic and Master Magic used to be official WCA events. They were removed from the list after 2012 and have not been held at official competitions since 2013. Today, the LingAo Magic 12p is more of a collector's puzzle and something to solve for fun than a training tool. Many people still time their solves on their own, though.

Who is it for?

For anyone who wants a break from cubes and would like to try a puzzle with a different mechanism. It's also a good choice for collectors and a nice gift for someone who enjoys puzzles.
