Meffert's Metalised Egg 3x3

Meffert's Metalised Egg 3x3 is a puzzle with a classic 3x3 mechanism shaped like an egg. It is a shape mod, so after a few moves the egg loses its smooth oval and turns into a shape with protruding pieces. The entire surface has a metallic, mirror-like finish. We offer the Red version.

How to solve the 3x3 egg

Colors won't help you here, because the whole puzzle is a single color. Solving it means restoring its shape: the pieces differ in size and curvature, so you have to recognize them by their geometry. If you know a method for a regular 3x3 cube, you can solve it with the same algorithms. The challenge lies elsewhere: with a scrambled egg it's easy to lose track of which piece is an edge, which is a corner and where it belongs. If you can't solve a 3x3 yet, this will be a rather tough place to start.

This is not a speedcube. It has no magnets or tension adjustment, and the irregular shape and slippery coating don't lend themselves to fast turning. The egg is something to solve calmly, for the pleasure of the puzzle itself.

Despite the name "Metalised", the puzzle is not made of metal. It is plastic, and the metallic effect comes from the coating. One side bears the Meffert's logo. Users point out that the glossy surface picks up fingerprints easily and may get scratched with heavy use. So it's best treated as a collector's puzzle rather than a cube for daily practice.
