Meffert's Master Pyraminx (Pillowed)

The classic Pyraminx has three layers on each axis. The Meffert's Master Pyraminx has four, which makes it a higher-order version, a kind of "4x4 Pyraminx". This one is the pillowed version: the faces are not flat but slightly convex. The shape was designed by Timur Evbatyrov, commissioned by Uwe Meffert, the inventor of the original Pyraminx. Meffert's released this model in 2012, and it was the first mass-produced Master Pyraminx. The puzzle has a black body and textured vinyl stickers. It has no magnets.

How it differs from a regular Pyraminx

The Master Pyraminx has pieces that a regular Pyraminx doesn't:

• 4 tips and 4 axial pieces, just like the classic Pyraminx,
• 4 centers that rotate in place, similar to a 3x3 cube,
• 6 inner edges,
• 12 outer edges, twice as many as on a regular Pyraminx.

Altogether, that's 30 moving pieces. The tips, axial pieces and centers stay in place and only rotate, but you still need to learn new solving steps. Experience with big cubes comes in handy for the centers and edge pairing. A Pyraminx without centers and with regular edges is much simpler.

Pillowed shape

The convex faces make the puzzle look different from flat Pyraminxes and feel different in your hand. Meffert's also made its new Pyraminx and Professor Pyraminx in the same shape and size, so these three models form one series. A flat version of the Master Pyraminx is made by ShengShou, among others.

Who is it for?

The Master Pyraminx is not a WCA event, and there are no flagship versions with magnets or tension adjustment. It's a puzzle for those who can already solve a Pyraminx and want a harder version, as well as for collectors of Meffert's puzzles. For fast timed solving, a regular speedcubing Pyraminx is a better choice.
