MF8 Crazy Rhomdo Plus (Dode-Trapezo-Rhombus)

This shape looks a little different from every side. The MF8 Crazy Rhomdo Plus is a shape-shifting puzzle in the form of a trapezo-rhombic dodecahedron. Six of its faces are rhombi and six are trapezoids. You turn the faces around 9 axes. It can also jumble, which means it can make moves after which the puzzle loses its original shape. Every face has a circular center, and that is where the word "Crazy" in the name comes from. The original design comes from a TwistyPuzzles forum member who goes by the name El Cubitero. The mass-produced MF8 version came out in 2022.

What makes it difficult

A 3x3 cube has 3 axes of rotation, while this puzzle has 9. With this geometry, you can often make several different jumbling moves from a single position. That's why simply restoring the shape can be a challenge before you even start solving the colors. It's also easy to lose your point of reference, because the puzzle looks different depending on the side you view it from.

The Crazy version adds circles on the face centers. When you turn a face, the circle either turns with it or stays in place. This means the centers no longer behave the way they do in regular puzzles, and you have to take that into account in your solving method.

Rhomdo Plus and related MF8 models

• Standard Rhomdo Plus has the same geometry, but without the circular centers. It's a simpler version of the same shape.
• Crazy DodeRhombus Plus is a rhombic dodecahedron in which all faces are rhombi. The Crazy Rhomdo Plus has almost the same pieces. The differences are the core, the six trapezoidal centers and the arrangement of the pieces.
• The Plus suffix means extra cuts that split the edges of the classic Rhomdo into smaller pieces.

Who is it for?

This puzzle is for collectors and for people who have already mastered the Megaminx, Skewb or other shape mods. It's a good choice if you want a puzzle where familiar 3x3 algorithms aren't enough and you have to work out a large part of the solution yourself. If you're just getting into puzzles of this type, you may want to start with the Standard version or the DodeRhombus. As a first puzzle or a gift for a child who is just starting out, it's too big a leap.
