The MF8 Window Grilles II is a hybrid puzzle with 3x3-style face turns and corner turns at two depths. You solve it mainly with commutators and should expect some unusual parities. The mechanism is stiff and prone to popping, so this puzzle is primarily for collectors and experienced puzzlers.
MF8 Window Grilles II is a hybrid puzzle that turns both on its faces and on its corners. It was designed by Mr. Fok and released by MF8 in 2018. From the outside it looks like an ordinary cube, but inside it combines two different mechanisms: face turns like a classic 3x3 and corner turns at two depths. The deeper corner cut is similar to Dino-type cubes. The shallower one often goes unnoticed at first glance, but it does turn. This version comes in the stickerless bright colour scheme.
After just a few moves, the puzzle no longer looks like a cube with neat layers. Pieces from both turning systems get mixed together because their paths cross. That means you can't simply solve it as a 3x3 first and then fix the corners. Reviewers compare the difficulty to a 5x5, although the puzzle feels completely different. You'll mainly work with commutators and conjugates. You'll also run into parities that don't exist on a regular 3x3, such as a single twisted corner. For many people, working out these cases is the most enjoyable part of the solve.
To be honest, this is not a puzzle for fast turning. The hybrid mechanism has its limitations. Face turns are noticeably heavier than corner turns, and the puzzle can feel stiff out of the box. Users frequently mention lockups and popping. Putting popped pieces back in isn't easy. Align the layers carefully before every turn. When the puzzle starts to resist, it's better to undo the move, realign the layers and try again rather than force it.
For collectors and experienced puzzlers who have already tackled standard cubes, shape mods and corner-turning puzzles (Dino, Redi, Skewb) and are looking for a real mental challenge. This is not a good first puzzle or a gift for a child who is just learning the 3x3.
