MoYu MeiLong 8x8 V3

The third generation of MoYu's budget 8x8, released under the MeiLong brand (MFJS, also known as Cubing Classroom). MoYu MeiLong 8x8 V3 is a classic non-magnetic 8x8 cube. It is noticeably smaller than its predecessor: 65.5 mm instead of 69 mm, roughly the size of a typical 7x7. It weighs approx. 172 g, so your hands get less tired during long solves than with heavier big cubes.

What's new in V3

• Smaller size. The cube is 3.5 mm smaller than the previous version, so it's easier to hold and to turn wide layers.
• A solid core with six holes and a design meant to prevent the cube from loosening, layers wobbling and shifting. On an 8x8 this matters, because poor mechanism stability quickly leads to lockups.
• Rounded piece corners make the cube more forgiving of imprecise turns and are designed to reduce catching.
• Screw adjustment. You set the tension by tightening or loosening the screws, so you can tune the cube more for speed or for control.
• Matte finish. The stickerless plastic doesn't reflect light, and the matte surface doesn't slip in your hands and is harder to scratch.

Non-magnetic or Magnetic Ball-Core?

The MeiLong 8x8 V3 also comes in a magnetic Ball-Core version, with magnets in the pieces and in the core. The one described here is the standard, non-magnetic version. The layers don't "click" into place, so you have to keep them aligned yourself, especially when turning fast on so many layers. In return, you get a lighter, simpler cube with the same body and the same size. If you want to try out an 8x8 or need a cube for relaxed solving, you usually don't need magnets. If you practise for speed, consider the magnetic version.

Who is it for?

For cubers who already solve the 6x6 or 7x7 and want to try an 8x8 without spending a lot of money, and for collectors completing the MeiLong series. We don't recommend it as a child's first cube. An 8x8 has many small pieces and a solve takes a long time, so it's better to start with smaller cubes.
