MoYu WeiLong Skewb MagLev: MoYu's flagship skewb

WeiLong is MoYu's flagship series. The MoYu WeiLong Skewb MagLev brings the solutions from this line to the skewb. There are no traditional springs in the mechanism. Instead, it uses repelling magnets (MagLev), and both the magnet strength and the compression are adjustable. The skewb was released in 2022, measures 55 mm, weighs approx. 72 g and comes in a stickerless bright version. It is legal for official competitions.

How it turns

It's fast right out of the box. The magnets are on the strong side, so moves snap into place clearly, and the skewb stays under control even with nervous, aggressive turning. A lot depends on the setup: at low compression it feels soft, while at high compression it gets more scratchy. Without springs, the puzzle is quieter and there's no metallic sound. Some users find that a new cube can be a little dry, but it becomes noticeably smoother after lubing. They also point out that the plastic is fairly slippery. If you prefer a calmer, more controllable feel, you can slow it down with a thicker lube.

Adjustment and internals

Magnet strength can be set to 5 positions. When you turn the layers, you can see the magnet, which you adjust with the included tool. Compression in the MagLev system has 9 levels, and you access the adjustment under removable caps. The pieces have a purple interior, like other MoYu MagLev models, and a "dragon scale" texture that reduces friction between the layers. The set includes adjustment tools and a transparent box that also works as a stand.

Who is it for?

For people who practise skewb regularly and want a predictable competition puzzle that can be tuned to their turning style. Reviews of this model are mostly very positive. However, some skewbers still prefer competing flagships, so it's a matter of preference rather than the only right choice. For beginners and kids, a cheaper magnetic model is more than enough as a first skewb. With the WeiLong, you mainly pay extra for the adjustability and fine-tuning for speedsolving, that is, for the last few percent of control.
