MoYu WeiPo V5 AI Gyroscope Core 2x2 is a smart 2x2 cube built on the WeiPo V5 mechanism. It connects via Bluetooth to a phone app (iOS or Android) that tracks your moves in real time. You can use it to practice, track your progress and compete in online battles against other cubers. What sets it apart from a regular magnetic cube is the gyroscope in the core, the built-in rechargeable battery and the charging station, which also doubles as a storage box.

What does the gyroscope do?

A regular smart cube only registers layer turns. The gyroscope also detects when you rotate the whole cube in your hands, so the app knows how you're holding it. This makes the animation in the app match what's happening in your hands more closely, and your solve recordings are more accurate. According to the manufacturer, the battery lasts for about 30 hours of use.

Mechanism and magnets

Under the electronics is a fully fledged speedcubing puzzle. It has magnets in the corners plus corner-to-core magnets, which pull the corners towards the centre. According to the manufacturer, there are 64 magnets in total. The magnet strength is medium, so the layers snap into place clearly without making the cube heavy to turn. The manufacturer promises smooth, fast turning and good corner cutting, with the smoothness attributed to a piece shape called "dragon scale". On a 2x2, watch out for popping. One user recommends solving over a mat at first until you get used to the cube.

Adjustment

The cube has a two-stage, screwless adjustment system. Compression can be set to 8 positions using the key included in the set. This lets you set the cube looser for fast turning or tighter for more stability.

Who is it for?

For anyone who wants to practice 2x2 with an app: timing solves, analysing them or playing online. It also makes a great gift for a child who can already solve the cube and enjoys competing. If you don't need the app, the regular WeiPo V5 with a magnetic Ball-Core will be cheaper, and the difference in weight is small. This version has no UV coating. There is also a UV version, which has a glossy surface and offers more grip.
