Picube MGC 7x7 Core Magnet

This cube is a YJ MGC 7x7 with a factory mod by Picube. The Picube MGC 7x7 Core Magnet uses the same mechanism as the popular magnetic MGC 7x7. Picube added core magnets and extra corner magnets, and lubed the cube with its own lubes before shipping. The aim is more stability during fast turning, which matters a lot on a 7x7.

The base: YJ MGC 7x7

The standard MGC 7x7 has been one of the most popular 7x7 cubes for years. It has the smooth feel typical of YJ, light turning and medium-strength magnets that feel similar across all layers. Users praise it for good corner cutting and rare popping. At 67.5 mm, it is slightly larger than some competing 7x7 cubes, which may bother people with smaller hands. Out of the box, the standard version is set up rather loose, so during fast turning it is easy to overshoot by one layer, for example while pairing edges.

What the core magnets change

The core magnets pull the center pieces towards the core. As a result, the layers return to place more readily and the cube is less likely to "drift apart" during aggressive turning. On a 7x7 this is especially useful during the centers and edges stages, when you are constantly turning the inner layers. The feel becomes more solid and stable than on the regular MGC. However, if you like a very light, free-turning cube, you may prefer the standard version. Tension is adjusted with screws, just like on the regular MGC 7x7.

Who is it for?

For cubers who already know the 7x7 and want more control when solving fast. It is also a good choice if you like the character of the MGC but were bothered by the looseness of its inner layers. For your first 7x7, the standard YJ MGC 7x7 or another cheaper magnetic model is perfectly enough. The Core Magnet version makes the most sense once you know what you are missing in a regular cube.
