QiYi MP Magnetic 5x5

QiYi MP Magnetic 5x5: QiYi's mid-range magnetic 5x5

In 2021, QiYi released the MP series and placed it between the budget MS series and its more expensive models. The QiYi MP Magnetic 5x5 is a magnetic 5x5 cube meant as a step up from the MS 5x5. It has exposed magnets, a black internal and glossy plastic in a bright stickerless colour scheme. It measures 62 mm and weighs approx. 154 g, a typical size for a speedcubing 5x5.

How it turns

Turning is light, fast and very smooth, and the cube feels soft when you turn it. To us it feels like an improved WuShuang, this time with magnets. On big cubes, magnets make a big difference. The layers drift out of place less, they are easier to line up after a turn, and fast turning gives fewer lockups on misaligned layers. In our opinion, the cube handles corner cutting well. To be fair, though, reviews are divided on its corner cutting, and some people rated it as only average.

One thing to know before you buy: the magnets are fairly strong. This gives every move a distinct, tactile feel, but your hands may get tired during longer sessions. If you prefer light, barely noticeable magnets, you may need a little time to get used to it.

Adjustment

Tension is adjusted with screws, so you can set the cube looser for speed or tighter for control and stability. The magnet strength cannot be changed.

Who is it for?

For anyone who has already had a first non-magnetic 5x5 or the budget MS 5x5 and wants a faster, magnetic 5x5 cube without going for a flagship. The cube is legal for WCA competitions, so it is also a good choice for your first 5x5 events. For a complete beginner, especially a child, the strong magnets may make it feel a bit "heavy in the hands" at first. It is better to learn to solve the 3x3 first.
