QiYi Tori Cube

This cube has no corners, and instead of centers it has six large rings with a hole in the middle. The QiYi Tori Cube (listed in some catalogs as the QiYi MoFangGe Tori Cube) is a 3x3 shape mod from the void cube family, with a rounded body and a stickerless bright color scheme. Each face shows only five pieces: the center ring and four edges.

How it differs from a regular void cube

A classic void cube has no centers at all, so you have to work out the face colors from the corners. The Tori Cube is the other way round. The rings have their own colors and the edges are matched to them, while the corners are simply missing. In practice, you only solve the edges relative to the centers. That sounds easier than a 3x3, and for anyone who knows the beginner's method it often is. Without corners, however, you can run into cases that are impossible on a regular 3x3, such as two swapped edges. Then you need an extra parity algorithm, and that is exactly where most people have to stop and think for a moment.

How it turns

The Tori Cube is not a cube for setting fast times, but for a shape mod it turns smoothly. The rounded shape gives the pieces more room, so it performs better than many classic void cubes, and some light corner cutting is possible too. It has no magnets. Tension is adjusted the classic way, with screws and springs. Keep in mind that the edges are fairly narrow and the cube is quite large. Some people find it hard to grip a face and end up turning layers with the whole hand rather than the fingers.

Who is it for?

The Tori Cube is a great pick for anyone who can solve a 3x3 and wants something new, as well as for collectors. On a shelf it looks completely different from a typical cube. It also makes a good gift for a child who can already solve a 3x3. For a first cube or speedcubing practice, a regular magnetic 3x3 is a better choice. The Tori Cube is not a WCA event.
