QiYi Tori Pyraminx

QiYi Tori Pyraminx is a void version of the Pyraminx. QiYi has taken the idea behind the Tori Cube, its void 3x3 cube, and applied it to a tetrahedron. A hole runs through the centre of each face, so the puzzle has a hollow centre and rounded shapes. It looks completely different from a regular Pyraminx. This is not a model for speed Pyraminx solving. It is a non-WCA puzzle, bought mainly by collectors and people who enjoy unusual puzzles.

Design and adjustment

There is no classic core inside, so the mechanism relies on a set of screws and springs with hollow guides. Tension is adjusted separately on each of the four faces. If the puzzle feels too loose, you can tighten it. If it turns too stiffly, just loosen the screws. The manufacturer says this design is meant to reduce the lockups and popping that are fairly common in older void puzzles.

The Tori Pyraminx has no magnets and no UV coating. The plastic is stickerless in a bright colour scheme (Stickerless Bright), so there are no stickers to wear off or peel.

What to expect

If you are used to a classic Pyraminx, you will need to get used to the moves again. The hollow centre and rounded pieces change your grip and the way you look at the puzzle. It is more of a curiosity to turn for fun and a nice display piece for your shelf than a tool for timed practice. For breaking records, a classic magnetic Pyraminx is a better choice.

Who is it for?

For people who can already solve a Pyraminx and are looking for something different, and for collectors of void puzzles and shape mods. It also makes a great addition to a collection next to the Tori Cube. If you are buying a first Pyraminx for a child, it is better to start with a standard Pyraminx and get the Tori later as the next step.
