Warrior is QiYi's budget series. The QiYi Warrior 4x4 M UV is a 59 mm magnetic 4x4 cube with a glossy UV coating in a stickerless bright colour scheme. Compared with a regular, cheaper 4x4 cube, the main difference is the magnets. Compared with the Warrior M without UV, the only difference is the finish.

How does it turn?

The magnets have moderate strength. They help the layers settle into place and keep the cube stable during faster turning without making it feel heavy. Turning is fairly smooth and easy to control. This matters with your first 4x4, because accidental layer turns happen easily during centre reduction and edge pairing. The manufacturer mentions improved corner cutting, a mechanism that reduces popping and pieces shaped to reduce lockups.

User reviews also point out some weaker sides. Out of the box, the cube can be stiff and rather dry, sometimes even sandy. This usually improves after breaking it in and lubing it. Some people report lockups on the inner layers, and those who like a strong "click" find the magnets too weak. At this price, these are normal compromises, but it's better to know about them before you buy.

UV or matte version?

The mechanism is the same in both versions. The UV version has a glossy surface that grips your fingers noticeably better and is more scratch-resistant. The frosted version without the coating offers medium grip and a matte look. If you don't want the cube slipping out of your hands, choose UV. If you prefer a "drier", matte surface, the non-UV version will suit you better.

Who is it for?

It's a great first magnetic 4x4 for anyone moving from 3x3 to bigger cubes, and for casual solving. It's also a good choice for parents looking for a decent 4x4 cube for their child without spending a lot. A speedcuber who can already solve a 4x4 and wants tension adjustment or stronger magnets should rather look at more expensive models, e.g. from the QiYi M Pro series.
