ShengShou Crazy 4x4 Cube

ShengShou Crazy 4x4 Cube (SengSo Crazy 4x4) is a 4x4 cube with a circular cut in the middle of each face. Inside the circle there are four centers that do not turn together with the face. The outer part of the cube works like a regular 4x4, while the circles have to be solved separately. This is the first version (V1) of the Crazy 4x4 series from ShengShou and also the simplest one.

How it differs from a regular 4x4 cube

On a classic 4x4, turning an outer layer also turns the four centers on that face. On the Crazy 4x4, the circle stays in place and only the ring around it turns. The centers move only when you turn the inner layers (slice moves). Because of this, the usual 4x4 solving methods are not enough. You need to understand how the circles move relative to the rest of the cube and adjust the order of your steps to it. If you already know the reduction method on a 4x4, this is a great puzzle to figure out on your own.

V1, V2 and V3 versions

ShengShou later released two more difficult versions. In V1 each circle has 4 pieces, in V2 it has 12, and in V3 16. The more pieces in the circle, the harder the solve. This product is the V1 with 4 pieces in the circle, so it is the best place to start your adventure with the Crazy 4x4 series.

Size and handling

The cube measures approx. 75 mm and weighs approx. 220 g, so it is noticeably bigger and heavier than a typical speedcubing 4x4. It is a puzzle for relaxed solving, not a cube for high TPS or competitions. It is available in the stickerless bright version, made of colored plastic with no stickers that could wear off.

Who is it for?

For cubers who can already solve a 4x4 and are looking for a new challenge, and for collectors of unusual puzzles. For your first 4x4 cube, it is better to choose a standard model. The Crazy 4x4 may discourage someone who is still learning the basics.
