SengSo Lustrous 3x3 M is a magnetic 3x3 cube from ShengShou (SengSo) that glows from the inside. The pieces are made of transparent plastic, with rechargeable lighting built in. Switch it on and the cube lights up from within, so you can solve it even in complete darkness. The version we stock has a Jelly color finish: a transparent body with colourful, semi-transparent faces.

How it turns

Under the light effect is a regular budget magnetic cube. According to the manufacturer, it has 48 magnets set in slots. Users describe the magnets as medium-strength and fairly tactile. They compare the turning to popular inexpensive magnetic cubes such as the YuLong or MeiLong. The cube is quite fast, and the corner cutting is good enough for comfortable solving. It is still a long way from flagship models, though: some people notice stiffer turning than in more expensive cubes. This is a cube mainly for fun, not for breaking records.

Lighting and charging

The light is switched on and off with a button hidden in one of the centres. You need to press it firmly, but this means it won't switch off by accident while you solve. The battery charges with the included USB cable. Charge the cube after unboxing, as it may not light up without charging. The light comes from inside the cube, so in the dark some colours (e.g. white and blue, or white and yellow) can be harder to tell apart. The brightness cannot be adjusted.

Who is it for?

The Lustrous M makes a great gift, a fun gadget for kids or a second cube for evening solving. The magnets help the layers line up, so the cube is easier to use than non-magnetic versions, including for beginners. If you are a speedcuber looking for a main cube for practice, a classic magnetic 3x3 model is a better choice. Here, the lighting and the look are what matter most.
