SengSo MoSheng 17x17 is a non-magnetic 17x17x17 cube by ShengShou. At approx. 111 mm, it's noticeably smaller than the brand's older 17x17. It features a multi-arm core, factory lube, adjustable tension and matte plastic in stickerless bright colors.
SengSo MoSheng 17x17 is a 17x17x17 cube by ShengShou from the new MoSheng series. SengSo is the name under which ShengShou releases its cubes. Each face has 17 layers and 289 tiles, and the whole cube is made up of more than 1500 visible pieces. It's a cube for people who have already conquered a 7x7 or 9x9 and are looking for a truly big challenge. It's also popular with big cube collectors.
The MoSheng 17x17 measures approx. 111 mm per edge. The older ShengShou 17x17 (Pillow) was approx. 122-123 mm, so the new cube is noticeably smaller. With this many layers, that matters: the cube is easier to hold in your hands, and inner layer turns are easier to do. The smaller size was achieved partly thanks to pieces that are approx. 2 mm thick.
Inside, a multi-arm core keeps the layers aligned. The pieces have rounded inner edges, which are designed to help the layers glide and reduce catching. The cube comes factory-lubed, and the tension is adjustable. The plastic has a matte (frosted) finish and offers medium grip.
It's still a 17x17, so don't expect the smoothness of a good 3x3. Early reviews say that, given the number of moving pieces, the cube turns decently, but catching does happen. It works best with calm, precise turning, making sure the layers are aligned before the next move.
This version has no magnets, so the layers don't "click" into place. In return, the cube is lighter than the magnetic version. With a cube weighing around a kilogram, that's a noticeable difference, especially during solves that last many hours.
For experienced cubers who know the reduction method from bigger cubes and are ready for very long solves. For collectors, it's also a solid display piece in stickerless bright colors. This is not a good first cube or a gift for a child who is just starting out. For beginners, a 3x3 is a better choice, followed by a 4x4 or 5x5.
