ShengShou Elite Kilominx

ShengShou Elite Kilominx is a dodecahedral puzzle from the megaminx family, the 6x6 equivalent in dodecahedron form. In the ShengShou line-up it sits above the Kilominx (the 2x2 equivalent) and the Master Kilominx (the 4x4 equivalent). It's a real challenge: solves take a long time and there are a lot of pieces. This version has classic stickers and comes in two body colors: black and white.

How it turns

The puzzle comes lubed from the factory and is ready to solve straight out of the box. Users agree that it turns smoothly, which isn't a given with large minxes. You really have to make a sloppy move to get a lockup. There are no magnets, so the layers don't snap into place on their own and you need to keep them aligned, especially when turning faster. Once the factory lube wears off, it's worth adding your own, because with this many pieces lube makes a noticeable difference to how the puzzle performs.

Stickered version vs. newer editions

The Elite Kilominx was released in 2018, and this puzzle is the first, stickered edition. ShengShou later released stickerless versions (V2), followed by the V3, which is also available in a magnetic variant. The newer editions have a slightly different design, so their reviews and specs don't apply to this model. This version has black or white plastic and standard ShengShou sticker colors. A full set of spare stickers is included, so you can replace worn ones.

Who is it for?

For people who solve the megaminx and bigger NxN cubes and are looking for another puzzle for their collection. Without knowing a megaminx method and big-cube reduction it's hard to get started, so for your first minx a regular megaminx or a Kilominx is a better choice. The Elite Kilominx is not a WCA event, so people usually buy it for the challenge itself and for their collection rather than for competition practice.
