The Valk 4x4x4 Standard Magnetic

The Valk 4x4x4 Standard Magnetic, also known as the Valk 4 M, is the first 4x4 cube in The Valk series. It is made by QiYi (MoFangGe), and Mats Valk worked on the design. It is an updated version of the QiYi WuQue from the same company, but the cube is smaller: it measures 60 mm, while the WuQue and most 4x4s of that time measured 62 mm. That makes it easier to hold and turn if you have smaller hands.

How the Valk 4 M turns

At slow speeds the layers turn smoothly and stay stable. When you turn faster, a slightly crunchy feel appears. It is reminiscent of the soft feel of the Valk 3 Power 3x3. Corner cutting is flexible and comparable to other top 4x4 cubes. In practice, though, a lot depends on how you set the tension: if the screws are too tight, the cube loses a noticeable amount of corner cutting.

Standard Magnetic or Strong?

The Valk 4 M comes in two magnet versions. In the Standard Magnetic version, the magnets on the outer and inner layers have a similar, medium strength. This keeps the cube stable, while inner layer moves and slices (e.g. during PLL parity) don't meet as much resistance as in the version with stronger magnets. The Strong version has inner layers with a stronger pull, which makes it easier to hold blocks during the 3x3 stage but requires more finger strength. In terms of smoothness, the Valk 4 M Standard performs well, although there are 4x4s that turn more lightly.

Tension adjustment and initial setup

Tension is adjusted with screws. The factory setup varies: some cubes arrive quite tight, others looser. It's worth taking a moment to adjust the screws to your own style, and the cube also responds well to lube. The package includes extra springs, stiffer than the factory ones, which come in handy if you want more stability.

Who is it for?

For cubers who already solve the 4x4 and want a proven, compact magnetic cube with tension adjustment. It will also appeal to collectors of The Valk series. Someone just starting out with the 4x4 can handle it too, but should be prepared to reach for a screwdriver now and then. The cube is approved for official competitions.
