WitEden 3x3x3 Mixup Edge-rebuilt Cube

From the outside it looks almost like a regular 3x3. After the first few moves, though, you can tell it's something different. WitEden 3x3x3 Mixup Edge-rebuilt is a puzzle from the Mixup family, cubes whose middle layers can be turned by 45 degrees. This lets edges and centers swap places, and the cube temporarily loses its cubic shape. That's why we've put it in our shape-shifting puzzles category. This version comes in a stickerless bright colour scheme.

What makes it challenging

On a classic 3x3, every piece has its fixed place. Centers stay centers and edges stay edges. On a Mixup, this rule no longer applies: after turning a middle layer by 45 degrees, pieces from edge positions can end up in center positions and vice versa. Knowing a method for the regular cube helps a lot, but it isn't enough on its own. You also have to get back to the cube shape, move the pieces to their correct positions and deal with situations that never happen on a regular 3x3. The Edge-rebuilt version has redesigned edge pieces compared to the basic Mixup, which you can also see in its appearance.

How it turns

This is not a speedcubing cube, and it makes no sense to judge it by TPS or corner cutting. The mechanism is designed for relaxed solving and experimenting with shapes. According to reviews, it turns smoothly and the difficulty level is reasonable for a shape mod. When making 45-degree turns, you need to align the layer precisely before the next move.

Who is it for?

For anyone who can comfortably solve a 3x3 and wants to try something other than yet another fast cube. The Mixup is also a natural first step into shape-shifting puzzles, and it looks great on a collection shelf too. For your very first cube, a classic 3x3 is a better choice. The Mixup is easier to start with once you already know a solving method.
