The WitEden 4x4x4 Mixup Edge-rebuilt is a 66 mm Mixup puzzle based on a 4x4. The middle layers turn by 45°, so edges swap places with centers, while the redesigned split edges add an optional extra level of difficulty. Stickerless bright version for fans of unusual puzzles.
In the box, this puzzle looks like an ordinary 4x4, just with noticeably larger outer layers. The WitEden 4x4x4 Mixup Edge-rebuilt is a newer version of the Mixup 4x4x4 puzzle, developed by WitEden together with Oskar van Deventer. The Edge-rebuilt version has redesigned edges that add yet another layer of difficulty to the standard Mixup. We offer it in the stickerless bright version.
On a classic 4x4, every piece stays in its own group: an edge always remains an edge, and a center remains a center. Here, the middle layers can be turned by 45°. When you do this, edges and centers swap places and the puzzle temporarily loses its cube shape. Once an edge ends up in a center position, some moves are no longer possible because the turned pieces block the layers. At that point the puzzle starts to behave a bit like a bandaged puzzle. Solving it involves two tasks: restoring the cube shape and solving the colors.
In this variant, the edges are made of two halves. When they are all correctly aligned along the equator, the halves can separate, which opens up additional moves. You don't have to use this feature. You can solve this puzzle like a regular Mixup 4x4x4 and only start using the hidden edge mechanism once the basic version no longer challenges you.
For collectors and anyone who enjoys unusual puzzles and is looking for something more than just another NxN cube. Knowing a 4x4 method will help you solve it. Still, the greatest satisfaction comes from figuring out on your own how the swapped pieces behave. This puzzle isn't meant for speedcubing and has no magnets or tension adjustment. It's also not a great choice as a child's first cube. It's better to start with a classic 3x3 or 4x4 and come back to the Mixup later.
