XJ TuttStarminx, a 20-axis puzzle with 32 faces

The XJ TuttStarminx from the XJ Puzzle collection is for those who have already solved the Megaminx and want to try something different. The shape has 32 faces, and the layers turn around 20 axes. The Megaminx has 12, so you can see the difference from the shape alone. The pieces are divided differently, and the familiar dodecahedron methods have to be heavily adapted, or you will need to work out a solution from scratch.

How it differs from the Megaminx

The Megaminx is a dodecahedron with 12 axes, where each axis corresponds to one face. The TuttStarminx has 20 axes and 32 faces, so the puzzle has far more layers to turn and many more pieces. The name refers to the Starminx, but the geometry is different. You can't simply carry over a method from the Megaminx or Starminx. You have to work out the order in which to solve groups of pieces yourself and find algorithms that don't disturb them. Solving it takes a long time, but for many people that is exactly the point of this puzzle.

Who is it for?

This puzzle is mainly for collectors and fans of unusual twisty puzzles. It is not a WCA event, so you don't buy it to improve your times, but to tackle a difficult and unusual challenge. We don't recommend it as a first puzzle, including for children. A classic 3x3 is a better start, followed by the Megaminx. Move on to the TuttStarminx once minx-family puzzles no longer give you trouble. Many people also keep it on a shelf, as it looks great both solved and scrambled.
