XMD Ambition 4x4 M: the first 4x4 from X-Man Design

X-Man Design is a brand of QiYi (MoFangGe). Under this name, the company releases cubes for more advanced speedcubers. The XMD Ambition 4x4 M is the brand's first magnetic 4x4 cube. It was designed by Jim Zhang. The reference point was the earlier QiYi WuQue 4x4, a cube on which some competitors improved their times. The Ambition turns noticeably lighter than the WuQue. It is often compared to the MoYu AoSu WR M.

How it turns

Turning is soft and smooth right out of the box. However, the cube needs some time to break in. The magnets are fairly moderate in strength. They feel noticeably different on the outer layers than on the inner ones, yet the cube stays stable. Corner cutting is good. Lockups and catching are rare, because the internal pieces that hold the outer pieces have a smooth surface. Some users report that straight out of the box the cube can be slightly scratchy or squeaky. Lubing usually helps with this.

Things to keep in mind

The inner layers are 14.4 mm wide. This makes it harder to hit just the inner layers during fast solves, so you need to grip them more firmly. Tension is set with adjustment screws. If you loosen them too much, popping will occur, so it's best to set up a looser setup gradually. The Ambition works best with accurate turning. If your turning is more chaotic, you'll need to focus on precision or set the cube looser.

Who is it for?

The cube suits cubers of different levels. It can be your first proper magnetic 4x4 after a beginner cube, or a light and stable practice cube for someone who doesn't want to spend money on the most expensive flagships. It weighs about 107 g at a standard size of 60 mm, so it's light for a full-size 4x4. It is approved for official WCA competitions.
