The most fully equipped Tornado V4

The fourth generation of the Tornado followed the V3, on which Max Park set the previous world record of 3.13 s. This time X-Man Design focused on greater stability and stronger magnetism. XMD Tornado 3x3x3 V4 Pioneer UV is the top version of this cube: it has MagLev instead of springs, Ball-Core, a three-magnet setup in every edge and a glossy UV coating. It measures approx. 55.5 mm and weighs approx. 82 g, noticeably more than the Flagship V4 (approx. 71.5 g). In your hand, it feels like a fuller, more "solid" cube.

How the Pioneer differs from the Flagship

Both V4 versions have Ball-Core, meaning 8 magnets connecting the corners to the core. They keep the cube's shape during fast algorithms. The Pioneer adds two things the Flagship doesn't have. The first is MagLev: repelling magnets do the work instead of springs, so each turn starts lightly, without mechanical resistance. The second is 3-magnet edges (two repelling magnets and one attracting magnet). They boost auto-alignment, so layers clearly "snap" into place and you get fewer lockups.

The Flagship sticks with springs, matte plastic and a calmer feel.

Adjustment

• 5 levels of axis distance (tensioning)
• 5 levels of elasticity, i.e. MagLev strength (compression)
• 5 levels of magnet strength, adjusted from the corners

Tension and compression are changed with the dual adjustment system, and magnet strength with a single turn in each corner. On the V3 you had to adjust 24 points on the edges; here 8 adjustments are enough. This lets you reach your ideal setup much faster.

How the Tornado V4 Pioneer UV turns and who it's for

The cube has very good corner cutting and handles lockups and corner twists well. It turns quietly and smoothly. It's faster than the Flagship V4. Compared with the V3 Premium, it has a heavier, more magnetic layer feel. The UV coating gives strong grip, although it can be a little slippery straight out of the box. The cube is also fairly tight at first, so it's worth lubing and adjusting it.

The Pioneer is designed for speedcubers with high TPS who like aggressive turning and strong alignment. It's less forgiving than the Flagship, and the extra magnets in the edges aren't for everyone.
