XMD Tornado V4 (10th Anniversary Limited Edition)

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of X-Man Design, the brand has released a collector's version of its flagship 3x3 cube. XMD Tornado V4 10th Anniversary Limited Edition is a Tornado V4 made of transparent plastic and sold in a special anniversary box. The edition is limited to 1200 pieces worldwide. It will appeal most to collectors and fans of the Tornado series, but inside it has a fully fledged speedcubing mechanism, so you can use it for regular practice too.

Mechanism and adjustment

According to available descriptions, the anniversary edition uses the same solutions as the Tornado V4 M Pioneer:

• MagLev, meaning repelling magnets instead of springs. This makes turning lighter and more dynamic.
• Core magnets and 3 magnets in the edges. They help align the layers and keep the cube stable during fast turning.
• Magnet strength adjustment that changes the magnet strength of a whole corner in one move. Setting up the entire cube takes noticeably less time than with older designs.
• Dual adjustment: 5 tension levels and 5 compression levels, with colour markings.

How it solves

The MagLev Tornado V4 is fast and fairly "lively", and the magnets clearly snap the layers into place. Opinions on corner cutting are mixed. Some users are happy with it once the cube is set up, while others say the Tornado V3 cut more willingly. The factory settings can be tight, so it is worth doing a setup: loosen the tension, choose the magnet strength and lube the cube if needed. The first owners of the anniversary edition describe it as smooth after setup.

Who is it for?

This version is mainly for people who collect limited editions or who main the Tornado and want an anniversary copy. Available information indicates that the mechanism matches the Pioneer version. If all you care about is a cube for practice, the regular Tornado V4 M Pioneer will be cheaper. As a first cube for a child, this edition has too many adjustment options and is too much of a collector's item.
