The second generation of the EVO gave YJ a chance to fix the flaws of the first version. The original MGC EVO was criticized mainly for its weak core, and in the YJ MGC EVO 3x3 II the manufacturer focused above all on making it stronger. YJ also changed the surface texture of the pieces and improved the adjustment system. It is a 55.5 mm magnetic 3x3 cube with manual spring tension adjustment and magnet strength adjustment. It comes in a stickerless bright color scheme.

How it turns

The EVO II is light and very fast right out of the box. The mechanism is flexible and rather loose, yet corner twisting rarely happens. Reviewers and users point out that the cube rewards accurate turning. With sloppy moves it is easier to overshoot, so if you prefer a more controllable feel, you may need a moment to get used to it. A stronger magnet setting, higher spring compression or a thicker lube, which noticeably slows the cube down, can help.

Adjustment

• 11 levels of spring compression, changed with your fingers after removing the center cap, no tools needed.
• 6 levels of magnet strength, set with the included tool.
• Fixed screw depth. There is no separate center distance adjustment, so the setup is repeatable but less precise than in cubes with classic screws. The individual compression levels do not differ much from one another.

The center caps fit in only two positions. After adjusting, insert them so that the tab lines up with the notch, and do not force them in.

Standard, UV or Ball-Core version?

The EVO II is available in several versions. The standard version has magnets in the pieces and a classic spring-based system. The UV version has the same mechanism and differs only in its glossy coating, which gives your fingers more grip. The Ball-Core version has additional magnets between the core and the corners, which make it more stable and easier to control, but it is also noticeably heavier.

Who is it for?

For anyone who wants an affordable, fast magnetic cube with adjustment and likes a light, loose feel. It also works well as a practice cube for improving turning accuracy. If you often get lockups or prefer a more "solid" cube, take a look at the Ball-Core version instead.
