With the second generation of the EVO, YJ fixed what bothered people most about the first version. The original MGC EVO had a weak core that could crack. The YJ MGC EVO 3x3 II gets a stronger core, a redesigned adjustment system and a new piece surface. This 3x3 magnetic cube comes in a UV Coated version, meaning it has a glossy outer coating, in a stickerless bright color scheme.

How it turns

The EVO II is light and fast, and the magnets are fairly medium in strength. Reviews describe the cube as flexible and a little loose, so it forgives less precise turns well. If you like very tight, stiff cubes, you may need a moment to get used to it. The inner surfaces of the pieces have a fine grid texture that reduces friction and helps spread the lube evenly. Setup changes the feel less than in many other cubes, so straight out of the box the cube is already close to its final characteristics.

Adjustment

• 11 levels of spring compression, set by hand without any tools. Reviewers note that the differences between neighboring levels are small.
• 6 levels of magnet strength, changed with the included tool.
• Fixed screw depth. Tension is set only through spring compression, without turning any screws. This usually gives an even setting on all faces, but on individual units one face may turn slightly differently. In that case you can even it out with a different compression level.
• Classic screw-and-spring system, no MagLev.

After changing the settings, the center caps must be put back in the correct position. The tab on the cap has to fit into the notch in the center piece.

UV, frosted or Ball-Core?

The UV version has the same mechanism as the standard EVO II. The difference is the finish: the glossy coating grips your fingers better and is more scratch-resistant than matte plastic. The series also has a version with magnets in the core (Ball-Core). It has more magnets, is heavier and settles the layers into place on its own. If you prefer a lighter cube with a looser feel, the version without core magnets will suit you better.

Who is it for?

For anyone who wants to move up to their first proper magnetic cube with adjustment, and for cubers looking for a light, flexible 3x3 with a grippy surface. Thanks to the simple manual adjustment, it is also a sensible choice for a child who can already solve the cube and needs something better than a basic model.
