YJ TianYuan O2 Cube V3

YJ TianYuan V3 (full name: TianYuan O2 Cube V3) is a shape-shifting puzzle, a shape mod of the 3x3 cube. From the outside, it looks like a cube with a sphere sitting inside. The middle section turns independently of the rest, and some pieces are hidden under its surface, so you only see them while turning. It is the third and hardest puzzle in the TianYuan series.

How it works

You turn the middle section to solve the centers and edges. Unlike V1 and V2, the corners on the outside of the cube also turn here, and you have to solve them too. In practice, you get a full 3x3 cube in a completely different form.

The challenge is that the edges are covered when the puzzle is at rest. The cube can look solved while pieces inside are still in the wrong place. To check them, you need to make a partial turn. Users say that anyone who can solve a 3x3 can handle the V3. Some of them point out that it is harder than a regular cube, because you cannot see things like the cross on the last layer straight away.

V1, V2 or V3?

• V1: the outer part covers the edges, so the puzzle can be partly scrambled without it being visible.
• V2: the outer frame does not turn, only the middle does. The pieces are easier to see, so it is easier to follow what is happening.
• V3: hidden edges like in the V1, plus turning corners. It is the most demanding version in the series.

Who is it for?

For people who can already solve a 3x3 and want a new challenge without learning a completely new method. It also works well as an interesting puzzle for your collection or as a gift for someone who likes unusual puzzles. This is not a cube for timed speedcubing: it has no magnets and is not part of WCA events. If you want to start the series with something easier, try the V2 first, where it is easier to follow how the pieces move.
