YJ Zhilong M Mini 4x4 Ball Core is a magnetic 4x4 cube with a side length of 56 mm. That's the size of a typical 3x3, while most speedcubing 4x4s measure around 59-62 mm. It's lighter in the hand and more comfortable to turn, which is why it's a popular choice for people with smaller hands and for kids. In some shops the same model is sold as the YJ ZhiSu 4x4 M.

How this version differs from the regular Zhilong M

The standard Zhilong Mini 4x4 M has magnets in the pieces: stronger ones in the inner layers and weaker ones in the outer layers. It's a similar setup to the one used in more expensive 4x4s. The Ball Core version also has magnets that connect the corners to the core. Thanks to them, the layers settle back into place more readily and the cube is more stable during fast turning. If you want to spend as little as possible, the regular M version will do the job. Ball Core is for those who want a bit more stability in the same small cube.

How it turns

The feel is fast and more crunchy than smooth. At 56 mm, finger tricks you know from 3x3 are easy to perform. User opinions are mixed, though. Some praise the cube for performing well right out of the box. Others mention popping during aggressive turning and weaker corner cutting than full-size flagships. Some also note that catching in the inner layers can appear after changing the tension, so it's best to make setup changes carefully. Lubing and a dozen or so solves usually improve smoothness noticeably.

Who is it for?

A great first magnetic 4x4 for someone moving up from 3x3 who prefers a smaller cube. It's also for cubers who want a light 4x4 for casual solving or travel. If you plan to train 4x4 regularly for time and have large hands, you'll usually be happier with a full-size cube that offers more adjustment options.
