YuXin Huanglong 8x8 Kilominx (also sold as the Royal Kilominx) is a dodecahedron with eight layers on each face. In the kilominx family, it is the next step after the 4x4 Master Kilominx and the 6x6 Elite Kilominx. It measures about 126 mm and weighs 561 g, so you can really feel in your hands that this is a big puzzle. It comes in a stickerless bright colour scheme, with no stickers that could wear off or peel.

How it differs from a megaminx

Kilominxes have an even number of layers, so they have no fixed face centre. On a megaminx, gigaminx or petaminx, the centre shows the colour of the face. Here you have to work out the colour scheme from the corners and build the centres yourself. Solving it is therefore similar to the reduction method used on big cubes: centres first, then edge pairing, and finally solving it like a megaminx. You also need to be ready for edge parity, which does not occur on odd-layered minxes. A single solve takes a long time, even for someone who knows the megaminx well.

Mechanism and turning

The outer pieces have a textured, contoured surface, so your fingers slip less during long solves. The mechanism is secured against popping. According to user reviews, the puzzle turns smoothly for such a large number of pieces, and the turning is stable and fairly tight. This is not a puzzle for breaking TPS records. Big minxes are turned more calmly and with control, and precise layer alignment matters more than speed.

Who is it for?

For those who have already mastered the megaminx and at least one bigger minx or kilominx, and are now looking for a long, demanding challenge. It is also a great choice for dodecahedron collectors, especially if they already own other puzzles from the Huanglong series. We do not recommend it as your first minx. To get started, it is better to buy a megaminx or the 4x4 Master Kilominx.
