A standard Kilominx is a dodecahedron of "size" 2x2. The YuXin Huanglong 8x8 Kilominx M has eight layers along each edge, which makes it one of the largest puzzles in the Megaminx family. The letter M in the name stands for the magnetic version, with magnets installed at the factory. The puzzle is stickerless in a bright colour scheme and belongs to the Huanglong series, the same YuXin line as the Master Kilominx (4x4) and the Elite Kilominx (6x6).

What is an 8x8 Kilominx?

It has an even number of layers, so unlike the Megaminx and Gigaminx it has no fixed centers. With no fixed reference point, you have to "build" the solve yourself. You usually start with the centers on all twelve faces, then pair up the edges, and finally solve the whole puzzle like a regular Kilominx. This is a long puzzle. A single solve takes much more time than on a Megaminx or an Elite Kilominx.

How does it turn?

The magnets help the layers settle into place, and the moves have a noticeable, slightly clicky feel. The manufacturer has used a mechanism designed to prevent popping. The outer pieces are sculpted, which makes it easier to keep a secure grip on such a large puzzle and to grab layers accurately. At this size, don't expect the speed of a speedcubing puzzle. Precision and control are what count, and inaccurate turns can lead to catching.
