A 9x9 Megaminx: a dodecahedron with nine layers on every face. The YuXin Huanglong Petaminx is one of the few Petaminxes from a well-known manufacturer that you can actually buy without hunting for it. It belongs to the Huanglong series, in which YuXin has already released the Kilominx, Gigaminx and Teraminx, among others. The Stickerless Bright version uses coloured plastic instead of stickers. With pieces this small, that's a big advantage: nothing wears off and nothing peels.

How it turns

Despite the huge number of pieces, the Petaminx turns smoothly straight out of the box. It doesn't arrive drowning in lube, and the mechanism usually breaks in after one or two solves. Each face edge is 52.5 mm long, so the pieces aren't excessively tiny and the puzzle sits comfortably in your hands. This isn't a puzzle for aggressive turning. With this many layers, you need to align each face carefully before the next move. Some users report slightly stiffer turning and pieces that start to slide out when moved carelessly. Turning more gently is usually enough to avoid popping.

How to solve the Petaminx

The method is the same as for the Gigaminx and Teraminx. First you solve the centres, then you pair the edges, and finally you finish it like a regular Megaminx. For the last layer, you'll need Megaminx algorithms plus the edge (wing) algorithms you know from the Gigaminx. A single solve can take several hours, so the Petaminx is more of a long-term project than a puzzle for timed solves.

Who is it for?

For cubers who have already conquered the Megaminx and Gigaminx (or Teraminx) and are looking for the next, bigger challenge. Collectors of minx-type puzzles will love it too. For your first dodecahedron, a regular Megaminx is a better choice, as the Petaminx demands plenty of patience and a good grasp of the reduction method.
